Speeches
Public Speaking
The ability to communicate ideas to a large audience, even under pressure, is fundamental. From protests to international conferences, these are my favorite speeches.
City Council of Manaus - 04/19/2017
When Uber started its operations in Manaus, several unions lobbied for prohibitive policy-making. Such restrictions were set to be approved at the City Council, despite a poll showing that 73.4% of the population was in favor of ride-sharing apps.
The movement “We Want Uber in Manaus” was created to inform the population of these regulations and to convince the city councilors to reject them. Nowadays, ride-sharing apps are widely integrated into the city’s urban landscape.
SFL's Award Night - 02/27/2016
At the beginning of 2016, I received the international award “Student of the Year,” given by SFL to the activist who caused the most impact within the organization. The other nominees were from the U.S., Ecuador, Hong Kong, Israel, and North Korea (Yeonmi Park).
The cerimony was held at the end of the International Students for Liberty Conference (ISFLC) 2016 in Washington, D.C.
National Television - 10/17/2017
As president of LIVRES in Manaus, I was featured in a program that was broadcasted on major national television channels – as determined by electoral statutes in force at the time.
I used the opportunity to reinforce that we needed more than just new leaders to change politics. We needed innovative ideas.
Paulista Avenue - 03/13/2016
In March of 2016, Vem Pra Rua and other civic movements organized the largest protest in the history of Brazil, with more than 6 million participants throughout the country. In São Paulo, more than one million people gathered on Paulista Avenue to demand the ouster of President Dilma Rousseff.
I left my remarks on this historical demonstration and challenged the president of UNE to a debate. The news magazine Época arranged the event, which would be held at a university in São Paulo, but then canceled it for reasons that were not informed.
LibertyCon 2018 - 03/03/2018
In 2018, I was invited to join SFL’s Global Leaders Retreat in Washington, D.C., which assembled 50 of the organization’s most accomplished activists from around the world. Among these, I and other six attendants were chosen to speak at the panel “What is Happening in the Global Fight for Freedom?”
Together, we represented Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Venezuela, Belarus, and Uganda. On the occasion, I announced that I would run for elected office in Amazonas later that year.
Paulista Avenue - 12/13/2015
When the speaker of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies accepted charges for Ms. Rousseff’s impeachment, Vem Pra Rua and other movements decided that we needed to prepare the ground for future demonstrations.
In December of 2015, we celebrated the beginning of the impeachment trial with a protest. This was my first demonstration in São Paulo, where, at the age of 18, I spoke in front of more than one hundred thousand people.
